Personal Project

Balisong Design

For my project I will be designing a functioning balisong comb or trainer. A balisong is a type knife that originated in the Philippines that is mainly illegal in many states worldwide. The basic design of the knife consists of two handles that can fold inwards and outwards to conceal the knife. However these two handles can be manipulated in a way that people can do tricks with it such as spinning it around a finger or throwing it in the air and catching it open. Though it is a rather interesting hobby to have, playing around with a knife, it is still illegal. To counter, people have made balisongs with a blank cut blade, or with a comb at the end, or even a bottle opener. The reason why I personally want to design this is because of the fact that I do practice flipping around these things and I would like to make one for myself. The research that would go into this project would consist of finding accurate dimensions, knowing what parts connect to what, and the size of some pins connecting the handles to the blade.

Key chain

Key chain

A few days ago we created a key chain design on inventor. It was a one day thing so it was not anything special. It was probably to test out the new 3d printer. However, I learned that it is different to design things in 3d than it is to design something in 2d. This is because of the fact that you have to take into consideration the structural integrity of the object as well as the fact that it had 2 sides and that you need to design both sides.

Personally I would not change thee design by much. This is because I intended for the text to be inverted. The only thing that i would change is to make the text a bit bigger to make it more visible.

Soma Cube Design

Soma Cube Design

We were given the challenge of creating a soma cube. A soma cube consists of a multiple geometric shapes that fit into a three by three cube. The requirements of the cube consists of five pieces, each piece no more than six cubes, no two pieces should be the same, and the whole cube should consist of twenty-seven little cubes. I have created two designs in which both fit all of the requirements.

To figure out how all of the pieces fit together without actually having the piece in hand, I used a simple technique. First off I drew the cube as a whole. Then I proceeded to draw in each piece into the cube as if it were already assembled.

Phone Stand

Phone Stand Concept

My phone stand design is basically a plastic phone case with a simple stand in the back. The stand was inspired by a photo frame stand in which the user can utilize it in either a portrait or landscape orientation. This can be achieved by adding a hinge on the back angled at 45 degrees. This will make it so that when the stand flips out it can easily prop up the phone in any orientation. The phone stand will also be flush with the case when closed to prevent unnecessary bulk to the phone.
